Is That Bug Supposed to be Here in Michigan?

In the absence of the right control measures, serious damage could arise from invasive insects. Included in the list of invasive species includes insects that depend on trees, as well as beetles, are some of the most prominent. Non-native species of insects in Michigan can bring harm to the natural and agricultural resources of the area. They can also cause damage to human health. That is why the State of Michigan can list them as restricted or prohibited. This makes actions including importing, introducing, selling, or attempting to sell such species illegal, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Here are some invasive pests in Michigan State:
Asian Longhorned Beetle
The Asian longhorn beetle came into the United States by accident. Believed to have been shipped in from Asia in pallets or wooden crates, this species is over-populated. Tree branch and trunk galleries serve as feeding areas for the larvae. Trees, or branches, can be harmed from the Asian beetle. Asian longhorn beetles love North American trees because they have little resistance. Their favorite host includes maple trees. With Michigan home to over 1 billion maple trees, the Asian Longhorned Beetle has quickly increased in numbers.
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
You’ll mostly find Brown Marmorated Stink Bug species on legumes, ornamental plants, vegetables, small fruits, and tree fruits. During the winter season, they like to shelter in warm areas, like buildings. The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug originates in Southeast Asia, but can now be found in 42 states, one of which is Michigan. The activity of this bug impacts crop production in the Eastern US areas adversely. This pest can become frustrating to homeowners, especially during the winter months when they move indoors.
Emerald Ash Borer
In 2002, the Emerald Ash Borer pest was first discovered in the state of Michigan. Since then, it has been the cause of millions of Ash trees in the region, in both neighborhoods and forests. The Emerald Ash Borer does not really spread that far and adults are able to fly about half a mile. Emerald Ash Borers can also spread to new areas with the movement of firewood.
Gypsy Moth
Gypsy Moths will also damage local trees. They tend to feed on leaves throughout the summer months. They are native to Europe and Asia, mostly transferring by wind, as the female moths do not fly. It’s also possible to transport their egg masses and pupae on vehicles and firewood unintentionally. Gypsy Moths can also disrupt outdoor activities during a large outbreak because of the frass and debris that comes from feeding caterpillars.
Japanese Beetle
The Japanese Beetle adult species eat fruit, flowers, and foliage of different plants. Japanese beetle grubs like to reside underground and leave brown patches in the lawn. They also like to feed on grassroots. These beetles wreak havoc on leaves and flowers of trees and ornamental plants, becoming a problem for gardeners.
If you encounter any of these invasive pests on your property, you might consider reaching out to an experienced pest control company. Pests, especially ones that are not native to the area, can become problematic. They can damage your trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers. Unfortunately, many homeowners do not always know which bugs are native and which are not. Bugs are just a part of the outdoors, but when they are not native, they can cause more problems. Pest infestations, regardless of whether they are native or not, can make your yard or home less entertaining.
