Bedbugs are common in many US cities. Bedbugs are tiny and parasitize humans and animals by feeding on their blood. The state of Michigan is a large state, and a few of its metro cities rank the worst in bed bug numbers. Renowned pest company Orkin released its latest list of top 50 US cities with bedbugs and 4 cities in Michigan made their way on the list.

Michigan’s cities with the highest number of bed bugs include:

  1. Detroit: Detroit sits on the number four spot, making it the worst Michigan metro city with bedbugs.
  2. Grand Rapids: Grand Rapids falls from number 10 to number 11.
  3. Flint: Flint has dropped from number 22 to 23.
  4. Lansing: Lansing retains its spot at number 48.

Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, and Lansing have the highest rates of bed bugs in Michigan. Although there is a marginal decline in the bedbug infestation rate of three Michigan cities, Detroit has significantly climbed higher. This shows that there are still more reports of bedbug infestations around these cities. The persistence of infestations could result from improper control measures, negligence, or unawareness. Bedbugs are tricky and can easily evade your elimination tactics. So, make sure to contact a professional for bedbug treatment.

Due to their cryptic and nocturnal nature, bedbugs can easily be carried by people into their homes unknowingly. This is why it is important to be mindful of possible bedbug infestations during travels. You can also learn other ways to avoid transporting bed bugs when traveling.

The SLEEP Prevention Strategy

Orkin has developed five simple steps (symbolized by the acronym S. L. E. E. P) to help travelers avoid bedbugs during travels:

  • Survey the room you booked in a hotel: Look out for little rusty stains on mattresses, bedding, and furniture.
  • Lift and examine areas that are prone to harbor bedbugs: This includes vulnerable areas like furniture, picture frames, and mattresses.
  • Elevate your belongings to spots where bedbugs can not reach: This includes areas like the bathroom and areas away from the bed.
  • Examine your baggage with extreme care when you come back to your house: Do not hesitate to place baggage away from the bed, furniture, or wall when in the room.
  • Place your clothing and other dryer-safe belonging in the dryer for at least 10-15 minutes: Drying your clothes with heat when you return home can help to avoid bedbugs.

You’ll also need a few extra tips to help you keep away bedbugs. Before you book a hotel room, look up your chosen hotel on bedbug reporting sites. Even if your selected hotel has not been reported for bedbugs, you still have to be wary and apply the S. L. E. E. P. method. Cover your baggage with a plastic bag that has a tight-fitting. You can also keep your clothes, toiletries, and other belongings in a zip-lock plastic bag. It can also be helpful to know what bedbugs look like before traveling.

Bedbug Home Prevention Tips

There are a few things you can do to prevent bedbugs in your home. Do a regular inspection of your home for signs of a bedbug infestation. Carefully examine prone areas like baseboards, mattresses seams, picture frames, and furniture. Look out for bloodstains on bedding, egg cases, and molted skins of bedbugs. Make sure to remove clutter from your house. Be mindful of where you go to avoid bringing them into the house and ensure to seek the assistance of a professional pest exterminator. It can also be helpful to look out for bedbug bites, which are small, red, bumpy areas.

It went great. No more wasps after 48 hrs. And it took only 15 minutes to apply the treatment. The man that came (I forgot his name but I believe it's a small family business) was very serious and knowledgeable. Also he was the first one to respond and be able to show up after I contacted 4 or 5 different pest exterminators.
