Dragonflies have been reported to be in active flight this year in Michigan. In fact, Lake Michigan recently made news when thousands of dragonflies were spotted swarming the waterfront. Visitors quickly captured the scene with photographs and video, leading many to wonder, “Why are there so many dragonflies?’

Common Dragonflies in Michigan

Some of the most common dragonflies in Michigan are the American Bluet Damselfly and the American Rubyspot Damselfly. Dragonflies typically begin emerging some time in late April but may only be noticed in larger swarms much later in the season. They usually migrate north from the southeast, where they mate, lay their eggs, and die off in large numbers.

Wisconsin also has its own population of dragonflies, which is why you may notice more activity along the western Michigan shoreline.

Dragonfly Facts To Know

In total, there are over 320 dragonfly species and 130 damselfly species. The average lifespan of a dragonfly is approximately one year. Most dragonflies spend most of their lifespan in the water, another reason they commonly migrate toward Lake Michigan.

Are Dragonflies Dangerous?

Dragonflies are not dangerous and are actually an important part of the ecosystem. Dragonflies may swarm around in large numbers, which can invoke fear. However, they’re completely harmless should they land on you or your property.

It is worth mentioning that dragonflies can bite. They won’t typically bite, especially if they just land on you. However, if you do try to capture a dragonfly, and it’s in the proper position, it could bite you.

What Is a Dragonfly Infestation?

A dragonfly infestation usually refers to a large group of dragonflies. A swarm may include as few as a dozen or as large as a group of thousands. The good news is that most dragonfly swarms won’t come indoors. Even if one or two make it indoors, they won’t typically set up home and cause a true pest infestation. Dragonflies feed on small insects, and most homes don’t have sufficient population to feed them.

They responded within less than an hour of my leaving a voicemail. Then, they were at our house within 4 hours. They assessed the situation, inspected, and took steps to take care of the problem. He also provided us with some suggestions as to keep from having issues in the future.

It went great. No more wasps after 48 hrs. And it took only 15 minutes to apply the treatment. The man that came (I forgot his name but I believe it's a small family business) was very serious and knowledgeable. Also he was the first one to respond and be able to show up after I contacted 4 or 5 different pest exterminators.
