4 Michigan Pests To Expect in the Fall

Summer weather is gone, and Michigan is in full fall effect. Fall in Michigan means an explosion of fall foliage, apple picking, and an influx of pests coming indoors. Pests aren’t any more active in the fall than in the summer, but the cooler weather can bring many of them indoors, making them easier to notice. Here are a few pests to be aware of in Michigan this fall.
1- Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs are one of the most common bugs you’re likely to see in Michigan in the fall. The boxelder bug measures approximately one-half inch in size and has a distinguishable red “V” on its back. What’s most interesting about the boxelder bug is that the same bugs you see during early spring outdoors near your flower pots aren’t the same ones that make it indoors during the fall.
Instead, it’s the second generation of boxelder bugs that come indoors. While boxelder bugs do commonly come indoors during fall weather, they don’t bite or cause much damage.
2- Asian Lady Beetles
Asian lady beetles are more invasive than boxelder bugs. These bugs are about ¼-inch in length. They tend to be a black color with bright orange markings. Some Asian lady beetles may have up to as many as 19 spots. Unlike boxelder bugs, the Asian lady beetle bites and gives off a less-than-pleasant smell. The Asian lady beetles weren’t always found in Michigan. In fact, researchers attempted to bring them to the north to help protect pecan trees. The attempts didn’t work, but the beetles eventually made their way after coming aboard a ship in the early 1900s. The Asian lady beetle primarily eats bungs found on pecan trees, which have increased in numbers over the years, likely contributing to their population.
3- Cluster Fly’s
Many Michigan homeowners will notice an increase in cluster flies making it indoors. A cluster fly looks similar to a traditional house fly, with a few distinct markings. Most cluster flies reproduce outdoors, sometimes as much as up to four generations in a single season. By fall, the last generation may come indoors to avoid the cold weather.
4- Ants
Ants are the one pest that seem to be in Michigan year-round. Ant production occurs in late summer, but some ant species are outside of that range. The problem with ants is that they live and move in colonies. Once a few ants are successful in finding food in your home, they’ll bring the rest of the colony with them. It doesn’t take long, and before you know it, your home is housing thousands of ants.
